Why this site exists

For 20 years my team and I have built websites for UK counsellors and therapists. Hundreds of them. Twenty years of sitting with practitioners who are brilliant at their work and invisible online, and of watching where their clients actually come from.

Two things about this field stayed with us. First, choosing a counsellor is one of the most personal decisions a person makes, and the information available at the moment of choosing is remarkably thin: adjectives, stock photography and "contact for rates". Second, almost nobody knows that "counsellor" and "psychotherapist" are not protected titles in the UK. BACP's 2026 survey of 5,000 adults found 48% believe otherwise. The overwhelming majority of practising counsellors are trained, insured and belong to respected professional bodies, but the websites where people look cannot show you which ones, or when anyone last checked.

That gap has a cost, and it is paid by two groups we care about. Clients, often reaching out at a low point, who cannot tell evidence from marketing. And counsellors, who spent years qualifying and cannot prove it where it counts.

WhatCounsellor is our answer: an independent find-and-compare site where every counsellor's qualification and insurance documents are checked by a person, where the date of the check is public, where stated professional body memberships are confirmed against the bodies' own registers, where fees are published so you can compare real costs, and where anyone can look up any member in seconds, free.

The work this site makes visible

What we are, in plain terms

  1. A comparison site with real checking underneath. We verify documents, publish the dates and let you compare fairly. We are not a professional body, we do not train anyone, we do not assess clinical skill, and we do not speak for the profession.

  2. Independent. WhatCounsellor is owned and run by Truly Empowered Ltd. We have no ownership links, partnerships of influence, or endorsements from any professional body, training provider, insurer or charity. We confirm stated memberships against the bodies' public registers because that is evidence a client can check, not because of any relationship.

  3. Fee-funded. Members pay a published membership fee. That is the entire business model. We do not sell data, we take no commission on anything, and featured placement is clearly labelled wherever it appears.

  4. Honest about limits. Counselling is not statutorily regulated in the UK. Verification here means documents checked with dates shown, nothing more, and every page that could be misread says so.

The client promise

Everything public on this site is free for clients: the search, the profiles, the Check a Counsellor tool and the guides. We show you the evidence and its date, so you can choose with your eyes open. We cannot give medical advice or crisis support: if you need urgent help, call 999 in an emergency, or contact the Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. If anything on this site ever seems to suggest otherwise, tell us and we will fix it.
